TO HOST FIRST-EVER “NEWARK MARCH FOR BABIES”

ON THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 17, AT 11:30 A.M., AT THE PRUDENTIAL CENTER,

165 MULBERRY STREET, IN DOWNTOWN NEWARK

Quarter-mile walk around the Prudential Center’s indoor concourse will raise awareness about the national rate of premature births;

One in six babies in Newark is a premature birth

Newark, NJ – November 16, 2011 – Municipal Council President Donald M. Payne Jr., Fire Director Fateen A. Ziyad, March of Dimes New Jersey Chapter Community Director Mary Linn Lombardo, and other dignitaries announced today that the City of Newark will host the first-ever “Newark March For Babies” event on Thursday, November 17, 2011, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Prudential Center at 165 Mulberry Street in Downtown Newark. WWOR-TV/My9 Chief Weather Anchor Audrey Puente will be serving as the Mistress of Ceremonies for the event.

 

The purpose of the walk is to raise awareness of the national rate of premature births, which is 1 in 8. That statistic is dramatically increased in Newark. One in six babies in Newark is a premature birth, which is a rate of 17 percent. African-American premature births in Newark have a rate of 19.6 percent, Latino premature births in Newark are 15.4 percent, and Asian premature infants are at 12.2 percent.

 

The City of Newark will have a team of municipal employees, including a team of 40 Firefighters, participating in the quarter-mile walk around the Prudential Center’s indoor concourse. Currently 35 teams are scheduled to take part in the event, which will include a special performance by the Apprentice Chorus of the Newark Boys Chorus School. Attendees will also get a preview of Feld Entertainment’s Disney on Ice presents Dare to Dream.

 

Additional sponsors of the event include Embracing Arms for Latrice, Newark Now, the Newark Alliance, Gibbons, P.C., and United Healthcare.
