JOB OPPORTUNITY — HIGH SCHOOL DIRECTOR IN NYC

Upper School Director (9th-12th grade)

 

The Calhoun School in Manhattan, a leading progressive institution serving 740 students (pre-K–12), seeks a Director for its Upper School, grades 9-12, with enrollment of approximately 190 students. The Upper School Director reports to the Head of School and is a member of the senior management team, working in close collaboration with other division directors and administrators. Calhoun’s Upper School is distinctive for and distinguished by terrific teenagers, a superb faculty and an innovative progressive program. The Upper School curriculum is rich and varied, with an emphasis on depth over breadth. The school’s open spaces and block schedule are designed to allow deep investigation and to make use of New York City’s magnificent resources. The schedule enables project and site-based learning in all disciplines. The arts hold a place at the center, not the periphery, of the curriculum. Creativity, eccentricity, originality, critical thought, imagination and good humor are celebrated.

Specific Responsibilities:

* Recruit, supervise and support all Upper School faculty and administration;

* Oversee curriculum development, assuring the ongoing evolution of practices that reflect the school’s progressive mission;

* Supervise daily division operations to include, scheduling, attendance, record-keeping, budgeting and reporting and coordination with all other administrative departments;

* Oversee the advisory system, developing and sustaining systems of assessment and communication with parents;

* Exercise significant leadership in the admission process, to include interviewing, presentations at open houses and other events related to enrollment and retention;

* Serve as the division’s instructional leader, staying abreast of best progressive practices in the various disciplines;

* Serve as Calhoun’s liaison to the Progressive Education Laboratory, a grant-funded collaboration with partner progressive schools through which a teacher-training program is being developed;

* Oversee and guide the work of Upper School administrators including college counseling, student services and related functions.

Desired Qualifications

* An advanced degree is strongly preferred;

* Teaching experience, preferably in an Upper School setting, is expected;

* Evidence of a strong commitment to and knowledge of progressive education history, theory and practice is required – experience in a progressive school is preferred;

* Evidence of commitment to inclusion, equity and diversity;

* Appreciation for the rich differences among and between students and the ways in which a progressive school might serve all students well;

* Evidence of strong organization skills and the ability to manage resources, time and space efficiently;

* The ability to communicate clearly, directly and confidently in public and private settings, both orally and in writing;

* A genuine desire to be Calhoun’s Upper School Director.
