SumOfUs Campaign Director job description

SumOfUs is a new global grassroots movement for corporate accountability. We harness new technologies to mobilize consumers, small investors, and workers around the world to challenge corporate power and demand sustainable and responsible business practices. We work to hold corporations accountable across a broad range of issues – from corruption to climate, from unethical marketing to CEO pay. Our team may be tiny, but we think big: We will push global pharmaceutical companies to make HIV/AIDS drugs more affordable and accessible in developing countries; we will make sure European consumers know when companies they frequent donate to Sarah Palin; we will organize mortgage-holders to fight against predatory lending and foreclosures.
We plan to launch soon and are seeking a full-time Campaign Director starting as soon as possible, initially for a short-term (3-6 month) contract but with the hope and expectation that the end result will be a permanent position. The position can be based anywhere in the world, contingent on fast and reliable internet access.
Let’s be clear: this is a start-up environment, and you will be only the second full-time employee – so you’re going to be doing everything from fundraising to campaign development to getting banners printed at 10:30pm at the only open print shop in Johannesburg the night before a stunt. We work out of living rooms and coffee shops and we roll with the punches. If you crave security and routine, this is not the role for you.
But if you’ve got experience taking on multinational corporations with a few thousand dollars, a Twitter account and a gorilla suit; if you know how to find a company’s financial and PR weak spots and get inside the CEO’s head; if you’re deeply frustrated with corporate capture of democracy; if you want a chance to be part of something world-changing right from the beginning – you could be the perfect candidate.
We need someone who:
Has experience running market campaigns and/or working closely with decision-makers at multinational corporations in a business/PR context;
Is voraciously multi-talented and willing to learn and do anything to see the job through;
Is dedicated to building a fairer and more sustainable global economy;
Is familiar with the MoveOn/Avaaz model of organizing;
Is an excellent writer and communicator;
Is a globally-minded movement-builder;
Has demonstrated people & project management skills;
Is comfortable with new technology and social media;
Can travel internationally on a fairly regular basis;
Can provide your own laptop;
Is fluent in English.
Big pluses include (we expect the successful candidate to have at least a few of these):
Proficiency in major world languages other than English;
Experience living in multiple regions of the world;
Deep understanding of the global financial system;
Experience working for a large corporation;
Experience in online campaigning, especially writing email action alerts;
Advanced tech & design skills (eg, CSS, SQL, video editing) and/or the ability to manage developers;
Media pitching experience and/or relationships with political or business journalists (especially in Europe & the US);
Fundraising experience and/or relationships with potential individual donors or foundations
Experience working in or closely with the labor movement;
Relationships in the socially responsible investment community;
Familiarity with corporate, libel, human rights, labor, and/or international law.
Applications will be processed on a rolling basis. To apply, email taren (at) sumofus.org with:
An introductory email/cover letter in the body of the email. Remember, a big part of your job is going to be writing emails to persuade people to do things. So, you should be able to write a good email persuading us to hire you! And don’t be afraid to get creative about it.
Your resume attached.
The catchiest subject line you can think of, with “(Campaign Director Applicant)” at the end [eg: “Some of us like SumOfUs (Campaign Director Applicant)”].
We have no formal education requirements – we believe university is just one campus in the school of life. We expect to hire someone with 5-15 years of professional experience for the Campaign Director position, but are open to expressions of interest from others (and we may keep your resume on file for future positions). Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
