LANDLORDS MUST KEEP APARTMENTS AT 68 DEGREES FROM 6 A.M. TO 11 P.M. AND 65 DEGREES FROM 11 P.M. TO 6 A.M.

For Immediate Release

MAYOR BOOKER REMINDS RESIDENTS ABOUT CITY ORDINANCE:

LANDLORDS MUST KEEP APARTMENTS AT 68 DEGREES FROM 6 A.M. TO 11 P.M. AND 65 DEGREES FROM 11 P.M. TO 6 A.M.

Landlords must provide tenants with heat between October 1, 2011, through May 1, 2012;

City inspectors will respond to tenants’ complaints of no heat or hot water

Newark, NJ – October 28, 2011 – Mayor Cory A. Booker and Acting Director of Neighborhood and Recreational Services Tharien Karim Arnold reminded Newark residents today that that the heating season began on October 1, and landlords in Newark are required by municipal ordinance to maintain homes at 68 degrees between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m., and at 65 degrees from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., from October 1, 2011, through May 1, 2012.

“Maintaining public safety in Newark also means providing residents with sufficient heat in winter,” said Mayor Booker. “Landlords have a moral and legal obligation to provide heat to their tenants and I urge them to follow city laws.”

Failure to supply heat at the minimum of 68 degrees can result in legal action in Newark Municipal Court. Fines on landlords can exceed $1,000 per-day for each day until the heat is fully restored.

Tenants residing in apartments without heat, without running hot water, or have had their utilities shut off can call the City of Newark’s Non-Emergency Call Center at (973) 733-4311, Mondays to Fridays, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. On weekends and holidays, please contact the “No Heat Hotline” at (973) 733-6471, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“Most of our landlords follow the law and provide residents with heat during the winter months,” Acting Director Arnold said. “However, some landlords are unable or unwilling to do so. We will hold those landlords accountable who fail to heat apartments, and protect our residents.”

The ordinance for “No Heat” 18:3-1.19 (C) states: When the owner is obligated to supply heat, such heat shall be supplied in every unit of dwelling space and every habitable room therein from October 1 through May 1 so that: Between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. a minimum inside temperature of 68 degrees Fahrenheit shall be maintained. Between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. a minimum inside temperature of 65 degrees Fahrenheit shall be maintained.

Anyone with questions about the City’s no-heat ordinances or any other Newark municipal policy or program can contact the Newark Non-Emergency Call Center at (973) 733-4311.

Newark, NJ – October 26, 2011 – Mayor Cory A. Booker, the Municipal Council, Police Director Samuel A. DeMaio, Police Chief Sheilah A. Coley and NJ TRANSIT are advising Newark residents and visitors that on Thursday, November 3 and on Friday, November 4, during the hours of 7 a.m. until 7 p.m., there will be extensive traffic delays in the area around City Hall and Downtown Newark along McCarter Highway, Market Street, Raymond Boulevard, Broad Street, Mulberry Street, Halsey Street, Washington Street, and University Avenue, due to street closures and the re-routing of buses.

Newark Police will intermittently close the section of Raymond Boulevard between Mulberry Street and Broad Street to all traffic. Residents and visitors are advised to avoid downtown Newark and Broad Street if at all possible on both days.

NJ TRANSIT is also advising customers of adjustments to Newark Light Rail and bus service in downtown Newark on Thursday, November 3 and Friday, November 4 at Military Park Station. As a result of the filming, the Newark Light Rail will not operate between Newark Penn Station and Orange Street Station and between Newark Penn Station and Broad Street Station on both days.

CITY OF NEWARK TO HOST FREE EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS TRAINING

FOR RESIDENTS, NOW THROUGH NOVEMBER 19

Red Cross training will teach CPR, First Aid, Disaster Mass Care, and Shelter Operations;

Participants will learn about measures they can take to protect their families during disaster

Newark, NJ October 24, 2011 R11; Mayor Cory A. Booker, Newark Emergency Management and Domestic Preparedness Director Keith Isaac, and Acting Child and Family Well-Being Director Tanya Williamson announced that the City of Newark’s Department of Child and Family Well-Being is offering a series of FREE Emergency Preparedness training courses for disaster response. The classes are going on now, and will continue through November 19. A list of sites, dates, and times are included at the end of this release.

R20;Natural disasters, fires, accidents, or terrorists can strike anywhere, at any time,R21; said Mayor Booker. But when they happen, trained, motivated, and committed residents rise as one, united by love of their City, to manifest our city’s spiritual strength to face times of trial. I urge all residents to register and attend these important classes.

The classes are organized into four subject areas: CPR and First Aid, Disaster Mass Care, Shelter Operations, and Shelter Simulation. The classes are being taught by the American Red Cross. They take place on weekdays and Saturdays. Pre-registration is encouraged.

R20;When the time to perform occurs, the time to prepare has passed,R21; said Director Williamson. R20;You never know when a disaster may occur, from snowstorms to hurricanes to earthquakes. The need for emergency preparedness has become an important presence in our daily lives. I strongly urge all residents to take advantage of this unique and timely opportunity, and be prepared when it comes time to perform.R21;

R20;This class will help our residents learn vital skills and to use important tools they may need to save their families and loved ones in time of disaster,R21; said Director Isaac. R20;It will make us a better-prepared city for the next crisis we face.R21;

R20;One of the many goals at the American Red Cross is to insure that both residents and businesses are ready when a disaster strikes. Whether natural or man-made, it is critical that we be ready when the time comes. This is our opportunity to reach out to the residents of Newark to help them protect not only themselves, but their loved ones as well. At the end of these courses they will not only be able to perform first aid, but will also know how to prepare for the next disaster. We may not always know when a disaster may strike, but we know that it will and we need to be ready,R21; said Ronald Dorrell, Regional Director for Emergency Response for the American Red Cross of Northern New Jersey.

Five College Fellowship Program 2012-13

*Five College Fellowship Program 2012-13*

http://www.fivecolleges.edu/academic_programs/academprog_fellowship.html

Five College Fellowships offer year-long residencies for doctoral students
completing dissertations. The program supports scholars from
under-represented groups and/or scholars with unique interests and histories
whose engagement in the Academy will enrich scholarship and teaching. This
year we expect to award four fellowships for 2012-13.

Each Fellow will be hosted within an appropriate department or program
at *Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College or Smith College. *

(At Smith, recipients hold a Mendenhall Fellowship.)
Applications are to the program, not to a specific hosting campus.

This is a residential fellowship. Fellows are provided research and teaching
mentors and connected through the consortial office to resources and
scholars across the five campuses, which include UMass Amherst. The office
also supports meetings of the Fellows throughout the year.

The fellowship includes a $30,000 stipend, a research grant, health
benefits, office space, housing or housing assistance, and library
privileges at all five campuses belonging to the consortium.

While the award places primary emphasis on completion of the dissertation,
most fellows teach at their hosting institution, but never more than a
single one-semester course.
