CITY OF NEWARK HAS MOBILIZED EMERGENCY TREE AND SNOW REMOVAL TEAMS TO CLEAR ROADS AND RESPOND TO SNOWSTORM EMERGENCIES

CITY OF NEWARK HAS MOBILIZED EMERGENCY TREE AND SNOW REMOVAL TEAMS TO

CLEAR ROADS AND RESPOND TO SNOWSTORM EMERGENCIES

When reporting a fallen tree or downed wire it is very important that residents provide the exact location and the nearest cross street;

To report fallen trees and streets that need salting or plowing, contact the Division of Sanitation at (973) 733-5830

Newark, NJ – October 29, 2011 – Mayor Cory A. Booker, the Newark Municipal Council, Police Director Samuel A. Demaio, Police Chief Sheilah A. Coley, Fire Director Fateen A. Ziyad, Fire Chief John G. Centanni, Office of Emergency Management Director Keith Isaac and Acting Director of Neighborhood and Recreational Services Tharien K. Arnold announced today that the City of Newark is receiving numerous reports of fallen trees, downed power lines and power outages throughout the city due to the snowstorm.

R20;Our entire City is being affected by the snow storm and we are urging residents to stay off the roads unless necessary. I am grateful to our incredible emergency management team and our dedicated public servants, who are working around the clock to make sure that we can keep Newark safe. Our emergency tree teams are clearing roads as we speak and we are urging residents to report fallen trees and downed wires. If we all act as good neighbors and good citizens, Newark can avoid the hazards and dangers snow creates,R21; Mayor Booker said.

Fire and police are handling the removal of fallen trees and are coordinating with PSE&G to respond to locations with downed wires and trees. Residents are urged to report fallen trees by calling (973) 733-5830. Residents are also urged to report downed wires by calling PSE&G at 1-800-436-7734. Downed wires may appear dead but should always be considered “live.” STAY AWAY FROM ALL DOWNED LINES. Do not approach or drive over a downed line and do not touch anything that it might be in contact with. Parents are urged to check for downed wires in areas where their children might play and to remind the children to stay far away from any wires. If a wire falls on a vehicle, passengers should stay in the vehicle until help arrives.

Home and property owners are responsible for clearing snow and ice from all private residential and commercial property, including areas in and around driveways, sidewalks, and walkways. The City of Newark does not provide snow removal services to private property – residential or commercial.

  • Streets must be cleared from curb to curb. Residents and business owners are encouraged to remove snow in a two-foot circumference around fire hydrants located in front of their residences or businesses. Clearing the streets of snow may require several passes of the snow plows.
  • If you have no sidewalk, pile snow on the left side of the driveway (stand facing the residence). If there is a sidewalk in front of the residence, pile snow to the left of the driveway behind the shovel (stand facing the residence).
  • After the street is plowed, the front of the residence should remain clear of obstructions for parking.

There are two Snow Removal ordinances: 29:17-3. Keeping Traffic Lanes Clear; Manner of Clearing Access of Parking Places: “No person shall place, or cause to be placed, any snow or ice upon the traffic lanes of the roadway of any streets. In the event that it is necessary to clear the roadway of snow and ice in front of any property for the purpose of providing parking space or to give access to such property, then such snow or ice shall be property piled in the roadway in front of such property at no greater distance than six (6) feet from the curb line and in such manner that the gutter way shall be unobstructed. (R.O. 1966 22:17-3)

The second ordinance is 29:17-4. Dumping in Roadway from Private Property: It shall be unlawful for any person to remove snow or ice from any private property and place the same onto the sidewalk or roadway of any street (R.O. 1966 22:17-4)

Violators of either ordinance can receive tickets ranging anywhere from $100 to $1,000 from any uniformed Newark enforcement agency, including Police, Fire, Housing Code Enforcement, Sanitation and the Newark Parking Authority. All violations will be ticketed and subject to action in the Newark Municipal Court. Residents, business owners, and landlords are reminded that anyone who shovels snow into City streets will face Municipal Court action and fines.

As a “Good Neighbor” you can assist the City and your neighbors in weathering the snowstorm, by abiding by the following laws:

  • Park vehicles in your driveway, so that the plows can get through to remove snow and ice.
  • If possible, share your driveway with neighbors or secure vehicles on off-street lots.
  • Clear snow and ice from the sidewalk in front of your storefront or home.
  • Do not throw snow into the street. Place the snow on your lawn, on the side of your home or in the rear of the property.
  • Remove snow and ice from hydrants and/or drains near your home.
  • If you must venture out, take public transportation or car pool where possible.
  • Be aware of alternate side of the street parking signs and parking restrictions when road is snow covered.

For police or fire matter, residents can call (973) 733-6000. For more information on municipal services, residents can call the City of NewarkR17;s Non-Emergency Call Center, Mondays to Fridays, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., at (973) 733-4311.

About the City of Newark, New Jersey
Newark, commonly referred to as Brick City, is the third oldest city in the United States and the largest in New Jersey, with a population of more than 280,000 people. Newark sits on one of the nation’s largest transportation super-structures including an international airport, major rail connections, major highway intersections and the busiest seaport on the east coast.

With a new Administration as of July 2006, Newark continues to see signs of a strong revival. In population, it is one of the fastest growing cities in the northeast. Its six major colleges and universities are further expanding their presence. The production of affordable housing has doubled, businesses are returning and crime is going down. There is still much work to be done but Newark is on its way to achieving its mission: to set a national standard for urban transformation.

Newark Public Schools Updates…

Good Afternoon Newark Community:

In addition to the regular updates on Newark Public School initiatives, this week I am also providing you with an update from our partners at PSE&G regarding the recent power outages resulting from Saturday’s snow storm. Please feel free to share this information with your respective school community and constituent groups.

Lunch Application Update

Congratulations for a job well done and thank you for helping the district reach 91% of lunch applications processed as of October 21st. Three schools have reached 100% and many more are very close behind, with 32 schools having 95% or more of lunch applications completed.

A special thank you goes out to all the volunteers from the Coalition for Effective Newark Public Schools who helped assist schools in reaching out to parents and providing assistance.

We ask that our school communities please keep up the momentum as applications are accepted throughout the school year. Every application processed may assist a family in need of a free or reduced price lunch.

GradTracker

The Newark Public Schools want to empower students and families to track progress towards graduation. A GradTracker report will soon be provided to advise every current senior as well as any student who has been in high school for 4 years or more, of his/her progress towards graduation. Essentially, the GradTracker report is a representation of the courses needed to meet graduation requirements with indication of the students’ successful completion of those courses.

To ensure that we do not provide parents and students with inaccurate information, appropriate staff members in NPS high schools have been involved in a student-by-student review of the historical grades for each of these students to ensure that they receive proper credit for all successfully completed courses. In most cases, the staff involved in this review are the Vice-Principals in Charge of Scheduling (SVP); in schools that do not have an SVP, the principal is conducting this review.

We anticipate that this report will be available to schools for the November 16th Parent-Teacher Conferences.

Newark Teacher Innovation Fund

The Foundation for Newark’s Future (FNF) recently announced a $600,000 initiative to fund teacher-designed and driven programs that will begin in schools citywide this school year. The first round for applications will open on Tuesday, November 1 and close on Wednesday, November 30. The teams of at least 3-5 Newark classroom teachers can apply for up to $10,000 in grant funding to design and implement a new, innovative program in their school building. Programs should facilitate teacher collaboration and sharing of best practices, instructional strategies, curriculum, and data to consciously inform teacher practice and impact student growth.

NJ Devils Honor Roll Program

The New Jersey Devils Honor Roll program is a partnership between the Newark Public Schools and the New Jersey Devils. The program rewards our students for their academic achievements. This school year the New Jersey Devils will continue to support our learning communities and acknowledge students who make the honor roll by rewarding them with complementary tickets to a home game at the Prudential Center. Students in grades 3 to 12 are eligible based on the criteria listed in the attached letter.

Lastly, please know that five of our schools experienced power outages and were closed today as a result of Saturday’s snow storm. Those schools include: Ivy Hill, Lincoln, Park Elementary, Ridge Street, and St. Anthony’s in Belleville (for Wilson Avenue School’s 1st -3rd graders). We are happy to report that the power at Park Elementary and St. Anthony’s has been restored. We will continue to provide updates as we receive them. Information will also be shared via our Blackboard Connect phone messaging system and posted on our website.

Thank you for your continued support of the Newark Public Schools.

Slay the vampires, save the world.

Hi,

I thought I should warn you that vampires have likely invaded your room.

Don’t be alarmed. You can handle this.

Yes, I am talking about vampire electronics, but the danger is real. These vampires suck.

Ipod chargers, computer chargers, phone chargers – these electronics are sucking energy even when not in use!

Please, unplug your chargers when you aren’t using them. Slay the vampires, save energy, save money, and save the world.

First, warn your friends.

Then, report a vampire slaying.

Thanks,
Matei Gheorghiu

Opportunity for teachers to speak up for the teaching profession

Michelle Rhee’s Students First is teaming up with hedge fund billionaire David Tepper’s Better Education for Kids to recruit NJ teachers to support their teacher evaluation agenda. Both well-funded corporate reform groups support the elimination of tenure and seniority rights and the imposition of test-based teacher evaluation ratings. In Washington, D.C, where Rhee was chancellor, her IMPACT evaluation system led to illegal firings, cheating scandals, and sustained turmoil.

Students First and B4K are offering teachers $100 gift cards to attend “roundtables” to “discuss critical issues regarding teacher evaluation, document their recommendations, and present their collective work to the New Jersey Department of Education.”

A sign-up form and list of sessions is here. Teachers interested in defending their rights and profession and responding to the corporate reform agenda are encouraged to attend.

PRES. OBAMA VIDEO TO HELP WITH STUDENT LOAN REFORMS

— Effective this January, if you’re someone who has different kinds of loans — guaranteed and direct — you’ll be able to roll them both into one direct loan and bring down your interest rate. You’ll only have to write one check a month, and you’ll see a discount. This switch adds no cost to taxpayers across the board.

— You might remember that, as part of last year’s student loan reform, borrowers’ loan payments could be no higher than 10 percent of their disposable income. This is a big deal — but it wasn’t going to help anyone enrolling before 2014. Today, the President announced that he’s speeding up this program so it will affect students next year — helping over 1 million students. This will have huge consequences for people struggling to make their student loan payments.

Sometimes, it can be hard to see how policy changes will actually affect your day-to-day life.

Not the case with this one. These changes will make a real difference in helping millions of Americans get by month to month.

We put together a video explaining how these changes will help Americans. Watch it to learn a little more about what today’s steps would do, and then make sure everyone you know who should hear about it does.

President Obama isn’t waiting on Congress to take action. He’s doing everything in his power, right now, to help bolster our economy and get folks back on their feet.

On Monday, he laid out new rules on federal mortgages to help make sure more families don’t lose their homes to foreclosure.

On Tuesday, the administration announced two new initiatives to help veterans find work.

Today, it means making changes that make student loans a lot easier to manage.

These are actions that can’t wait on the next vote or the next election. So long as people are struggling, this President and this administration will do everything in their power to help them when and where they can. It’s just that simple.

Now, let’s make sure that the millions of people who stand to benefit from today’s steps know about it.

Watch the video to learn more about today’s student loan changes — and then help get the word out:
