CHAOS AT NEWARK VOCATION?

—– Original Message —–
From: Wilhelmina Holder
Sent: Sat Oct 15 1:56
Subject: Fwd: CHAOS AT NEWARK VOCATION?

To the Superintendent, Executive Staff, and Advisory Board:

Parents MUST be able to go seek direct redress from responsible parties when problems arise with their children.  I have been asked to intervene on behalf of several senior parents of the Secondary Parent Council because this is not the case (or at least perceived not to be the case by some).

These two matters require yourimmediate attention at Newark Vocational.
MISSING GRADES
First, seniors at Newark Vocational do not have updated transcripts because their freshmen year physical education and/or health grades were lost and/or eradicated recently.  Parents were told this will require hand manipulation even though some parents possess copies of their children’s grades.  THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!  How did this happen and when will this be rectified?
STUDENT MELEE:
On last Tuesday, October 4, 2011, there was a melee between students from Newark Leadership Academy (Youth Build) and Newark Vocation during school hours in the school building.  This is a safety issue because the co-located students are older than the students at Newark Vocation.  This melee compelled the cancellation of the HSPA examination, which must be rescheduled.
Was a report of this incident given?  Were the parents and student body informed?
What steps are being taken to prevent incidents of this type from reoccurring  in the future?  We have never had the HSPA examination postponed due to a school being out of control.
What steps are being taken to address the school culture?
 What support and/or training will the District offer to this new principal from NYC?
Please advise the date of a parent meeting at Newark Vocation which will address these major concerns.
Wilhelmina

A Snapshot of Democracy Photo Contest

A Snapshot of Democracy Photo Contest | Deadline: 1 November 2011

For more information or to apply, please follow his link: http://www.wymdonline.org/contest/2011%20Photo%20Contest/Contest%20…

Share Your Experiences and Capture Images of Democracy
Submit your photo capturing democracy, and win an opportunity to attend one of the largest global gatherings of democracy activists, scholars, policy makers, and donors. The World Youth Movement for Democracy is pleased to announce the launch of its Global Photo Contest. Fifteen semi-finalists (Five in each category: Building a Movement, Democracy in Action, and Youth Igniting Change) will be announced on 1 December 2011, and will have their winning photo published on the WYMD Web site. One finalist will be selected from each category through online open voting for a total of three finalists. The final results of the contest will be announced on 15 December 2011.

Photo Categories

Democracy has been practiced in different ways and in different contexts. We believe there are core universal democratic values and aspirations that we all share, even though we live in different countries and regions, speak different languages, and practice different traditions. These can be reflected in our daily lives, and images capturing them can tell many stories about how people see, and where people find, democracy.
The purpose of this contest is to demonstrate understanding of the workings of democracy in your daily life by capturing images of democracy in action, youth igniting change, or the building of movements to create change for your community. The categories below outline concepts that photographs should embody. Each category is open to participant’s personal interpretation and understanding of how the photo applies to the relevant category, and should be accompanied by a short (100 word maximum) tagline to explain your concept and reasoning behind the photograph.

Each submitted photo is required to fall into one of the following categories:

  • Building a Movement — youth, human rights, and women’s rights movements, among others, can begin with just one person reaching out to a few others in his or her community. How do you and other young people begin building a movement from the grassroots up? How are young people and broader communities mobilized? How does a movement grow? Why are you part of a particular movement?
  • Democracy in Action — democracy is more than casting a vote. It includes active participation in your community and the political freedom to do so. It can be gathering your neighbors to hold a community discussion, posting information expressing different viewpoints, or joining a political party or civic organization. What does democracy mean to you? How do you perceive democracy in your community? What areas are others trying to improve? What is it about democracy that you most appreciate in your community? How does democracy translate to action?
  • Youth Igniting Change — Youth are a powerful force to bring about change to a community. Often change comes about by youth asking the question “why?” and planting the seed to make others in the community think progressively to improve society and policies. What are youth doing to positively change your community? How is change brought about?
Submissions
Please submit your photo by 1 November 2011, online at: wymdonline.org/contest/2011 Photo Contest/Contest Entry Form.html. Photos may be in jpeg, bmp, or gif format. Your submission must include a short caption that provides the necessary background to understand the meaning of the photo. The caption can be submitted in Arabic, English, French, Russian, or Spanish, and can be no longer than 100 words.

Rules and Regulations
Each participant can submit only one photo per category to the contest and may not enter duplicate photos (i.e. enter the same photo to each category). A person who violates this regulation will become automatically ineligible. By submitting a photo to the contest, the participant consents to publication of his/her original work and photos must not be previously published. Participants must be no younger than 18 and no older than 35 years old before 1 November 2011. Participants are welcome from all parts of the world – where democracy is limited, transitioning, or established.

Timeline
  • August 2011 – Launch of the Essay Contest
  • November 1, 2011 – DEADLINE!
  • December 1, 2011 – Announcement of 15 semi-finalists (five from each of three categories), and open online voting to select three finalists (one from each category).
  • December 15, 2011 – Three finalists announced

Review Process
Each category will have its own regionally balanced review committee that will be comprised of Leadership Board members and Democracy Ambassadors to determine the five semi-finalists. Photos will be evaluated based on:

  • Clarity – is it understandable what the picture is meant to capture and how it relates to the category;
  • Creativity – is the concept of the photo original and capture democracy in a new light or bring a new understanding to it;
  • Practicality – does the picture capture ideas or concepts that show how democracy can be applied and is applicable in diverse communities; and
  • Message – does the picture communicate a meaningful and relevant message.
The photos of the 15 semi-finalists will be posted online for open voting to determine three finalists in each category.

Prizes
Finalists will be provided with sponsorship to cover their travel and other expenses to participate in the Seventh Assembly of the World Movement for Democracy in October 2012. (www.wmd.org)

The photos of the three finalists will be showcased on the World Youth Movement for Democracy and World Movement for Democracy Web sites, as well as at the Seventh Assembly.

CITY OF NEWARK TO RE-PAVE WASHINGTON STREET FROM BROAD STREET TO MARKET STREET

For Immediate Release

CITY OF NEWARK TO RE-PAVE WASHINGTON STREET FROM BROAD STREET TO MARKET STREET, ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2011 FROM 7 A.M. TO 5 P.M.

Sections of the street will be closed to non-emergency traffic;

Access to driveways and other streets may be prohibited;

Project will improve safety of major downtown artery

Newark, NJ  October 14, 2011  Mayor Cory A. Booker and Engineering Director Mehdi Mohammadish announced today that the City of Newark will undertake a major re-paving project on Washington Street on Saturday, October 15, 2011, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., from Market Street to Broad Street.

Washington Street is one of our most important corridors, and we are working to make it convenient for the 21st-century motorist and pedestrian,R21; Mayor Booker said. R20;I congratulate our city’s engineering team on continuing with this important project.

Director Mohammadish urged motorists to plan alternate routes during those times, and allow extra travel time. The repair work on Washington Street is part of our city-wide efforts to improve our streets and make them safer for motorists and pedestrians alike, he said.

While paving is taking place, sections of the street will be closed to non-emergency traffic. During these operations, access to and from driveways and streets may be prohibited. If residents need to enter or leave homes and businesses during the hours of repair work, they should make arrangements to park their vehicles at another location.

The project is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Rockborn Trucking & Excavation, Inc. of Wharton, New Jersey, is the contractor.

Under the Booker administration, the Department of Engineering has begun a vigorous program of improving the CityR17;s infrastructure. The City of Newark is close to completing the largest park expansion and rehabilitation initiative in more than a century. On July 28, 2009, Newark opened Nat Turner Park, the largest city-owned park. Through public-private partnerships, the City was able to secure $40 million for the parks initiative, in collaboration with GreenSpaces, a public/private partnership, and the Trust for Public Land. Thus far, the City has completed new parks and fields at St. PeterR17;s Park, Kasberger Field, Boys Park, First Street and Thomas Silk Parks, Ironbound B Field, and, in cooperation with Newark Public Schools, has built a new athletic complex at Weequahic High School.  Parks have been renovated in every ward throughout the City.

In May 2008, the Department of Engineering won the New Jersey Concrete CommitteeR17;s Merit Award in the Decorative Category for the first phase of the Broad Street Streetscaping, which saw massive renovations to denote the historic nature of the R20;Four CornersR21; intersection at Broad and Market Streets. The project reconstructed sidewalks, created fence panels, installed new street furniture and traffic lights to promote pedestrian safety.

In November 2009, the Department won the New Jersey Society of Municipal Engineers Honor Place Award in the Municipal Construction Management Projects R20;FR21; Category for the first phase of the Ferry Street Streetscaping Project. The $1.9 million project, funded by the City of Newark and the New Jersey Department of Transportation, was a partnership with the Ironbound Business Improvement District, designed to enhance the IronboundR17;s central artery and gateway to businesses and restaurants in the East Ward, as well as improve safety conditions for pedestrians crossing the busy thoroughfares. Under the program, state-of-the-art sidewalks with planters and decorative lighting were placed down Ferry Street from Union to Madison Streets. These sidewalks improved safety for motorists and pedestrians. The project also reconstructed sidewalks, utilities and drainage, created fence panels and utilized already existing bike paths. New street furniture, signage and traffic lights also enhanced safety for pedestrians.

The Department of Engineering has also undertaken a number of pedestrian safety improvements, highlighted by R20;Project Red Light,R21; a partnership with the Police Department, the Municipal Court, and RedFlex Systems. This automated photo enforcement system snaps pictures of license plates of cars that run red lights at key intersections and automatically sends tickets to the carsR17; owners. Operating since December 2009, this system has made these intersections safer for both motorists and pedestrians.

The Department has also launched a comprehensive rehabilitation of the CityR17;s Recreation centers, Police precincts, firehouses, and other facilities. At the same time, the Department of Engineering has opened new repair facilities for City-owned vehicles, added environmentally-friendly electric cars to its motor fleet, launched green initiatives, and is continuing the restoration of historic City Hall.
